What is Cosmetology?

Students enrolled in Cosmetology learn the industry-relevant skills and knowledge necessary to pass the Oregon State Cosmetology Boards. Students can work to obtain the hours and competency required in order to graduate high school as a licensed cosmetologist. The learning environment is a fully operational salon, with state-of-the-art equipment, that is open to the public. Cosmetology students graduate high school with a competitive advantage by integrating real-world skills with rigorous academic curriculum.

Why

We want our students to be ready for whatever comes after high school. CTEC’s Cosmetology students have overwhelmingly passed their state cosmetology boards to become licensed hair designers, barbers, estheticians and nail technologists—and have gone on to universities, community colleges, beauty schools and professional jobs including JCPenney and 554 Salon.  Our students are ready to start their careers with the following industry-relevant skills and knowledge:

  • Hair design
  • Barbering
  • Esthetics
  • Nail technology
  • Babe tie-in extension
  • Microcertificates
  • Safety and sanitation
  • Career development
  • Personal accountability
  • Product knowledge and sales
  • Resume and portfolio marketing
  • Professional interactions, including networking and customer service

How

Students in the Cosmetology program learn contextualized science and English. Students receive coaching and resources to explore career options they may want to pursue directly out of the program or with continued education. Coupled with the experiences they have throughout this program, they graduate with a plan and the ability to adjust the plan throughout their career.

With a foundation of industry-standard skills, rigorous science and English training and the ability to obtain licensure, our students are ready to pursue their dreams and goals.

CTEC Cosmetology Staff

Instructors

Stephanie Hamilton

Stephanie Hamilton

Stephanie’s career in the beauty industry began over 30 years ago at age 15 as a receptionist in a salon. She holds an Associate of Applied Science with an emphasis in early childhood education from Clackamas Community College, a hair certificate from Cosmetology Careers Unlimited, and a nail technician certificate from CTEC. Stephanie has been a licensed stylist since 1996. She started at CTEC as an Instructional Assistant when the program started in 2016. She then transitioned into a teaching roll when the opportunity emerged; it was the perfect next step in her career of preparing students. Stephanie loves her husband, two daughters, three dogs, four cats, teaching Cosmetology, COFFEE and anywhere there is water!

Amanda Koonce

Amanda Koonce

Amanda Koonce has 15 years of teaching experience: one year at an alternative high school in Denver, CO, and 14 years teaching English at North Salem High School. Amanda’s favorite thing about working at CTEC is getting to blend her love for English, Science, and beauty all into one great class. When she is not teaching, Amanda can be found in the gym lifting weights or coaching classes, snowboarding, or reading a good book while over-caffeinating.

Hilda Simpson

Hilda Simpson

In 2012, after working with low-income children and victims of domestic violence, Hilda returned to school to turn a passion into a career and become a cosmetologist. She attended a career technical school in Utah to earn her license in Cosmetology – equivalent to hair design, barbering, esthetics, and nails in Oregon. During her time working in a salon Hilda specialized in hair color, women’s cuts, and curly hair styles and care.

After moving to Oregon to support her husband’s career change, Hilda was thrilled to find CTEC and the cosmetology program. As a bilingual teacher, Hilda is able to pass along her knowledge and passion to a diversity of students. She loves watching students learn and grow and with the end of each year she gets excited as her seniors complete the program and become industry professionals. When not teaching, Hilda loves spending time with her husband and four children, especially at the Oregon Coast.

Instructional Assistant

Rachael Murdock

Rachael Murdock

Rachael Murdock graduated from Regency Beauty Institute and has been CTEC’s cosmetology instructional assistant since 2019. She has been in the cosmetology industry for 9 years, working in high-end, specialty, and military base salons. She managed a local salon and was on their recruitment team, which did demonstrations in the Salem-Portland area. Rachael’s favorite thing about CTEC is watching the students gain confidence and have success in their field. When Rachael is not at CTEC, she enjoys spending time with her husband, daughter, and their two spoiled dogs.
